The Skerries are producing some really nice Plaice as confirmed by the second trip of the week but the following day a short trip specifically for Mackerel failed to produce any significant fish although the water is now a lot clearer than of late. Friday the 18th and a half day to inshore wrecks proved that the Pollack have returned or at least have started to bite with some nice fish showing the biggest of the day at 7lb 2oz falling to Jamie from Poole. More trips planned in the next week or so phone for details.

April 13 2014 what a great day flat seas, sunshine and a fantastic day with the chaps from North Wales on the Skerries Bank. Plaice, Plaice and more Plaice with some taken for the pot and many more caught and released. The Skerries was alive with both boats and fish the plaice being taken on a cocktail of prawn, and rag worm tipped off with a sliver of squid. Everyone agreed it was a good days Plaice bashing and certainly one to put in the diary. The photos show some of spotty catches.

Well the early part of 2014 has been a bit of a wash and blow out with storm after storm we have taken the opportunity to carry out a mini refit on Optimist (to make things better for you the Angler) and try and get out when the weather permits. The condition of the water around the wrecks and the Skerries Bank is well and truly stirred up and with the fresh water coming down the rivers Exe, Teign, Dart and the Salcombe estuary, this makes the waters extremely brackish and very very cloudy, not good at all for lure fishing. Good news though when we have managed to get out in the last couple of weeks there are a few Pollack returning to the wrecks further offshore as well as the good old Pouting, and plaice on the Skerries. No sign yet of early Cod, or Bass coming on to feed, but as the stormy season subsides and the waters clear we should be in for some very good fishing. Still some dates available for 2014, telephone or email for individual or full boat charters.

Merry Christmas everyone and Tight lines in 2014. Fishing lately has been mainly pouting on the Wrecks with a variety of species on the inshore reefs. Weather has caused the cancellation of a few trips and it seems at the moment to be blowing gale force winds every other day, but when the weather allows we will try and get out. Optimist is remaining afloat all winter and we look forward to seeing friends old and new aboard, February should see the larger Pollack arriving on the Wrecks, with April bringing Plaice to the Skerries Bank. Unfortunately we are going to have to put the price of full boat charters up next year as the cost of fuel keeps going up and the distances travelled for decent fish seem to be further, also individual's will have to share this burden as well. We are however offering customers who place a booking for 2014 with us before then end of February the chance to still have the 2013 rates.
On a lighter note I was offered the opportunity to join a trip aboard Atlantic Blue out of Minehead earlier this week for Cod, although when we boarded the Skipper Mike said that Cod were pretty scarce at the moment, I did however manage to catch 3 strap conger, a Thornback Ray and half a dozen Dogfish, the cod that did come aboard were not even codling except for one 19lber boated by the organiser Derek,a really good days fishing in very muddy water.

A good day out on the 9th Sept to some inshore wrecks looking for Bass we were not disappointed as several made it to the surface along with Pollack, Pout, and a lone Scad. We also have evidence of shark as only the head to the gills of a Pout made it to the surface with a nice sharp bite mark where the rest of it should have been. Look forward to seeing you aboard the Optimist soon.
